It's March — Time to Start Dreaming About the First Tee

The snow's still flying, but your mind's already on the course. Here's how we survive the off-season and get ready for that glorious first round.

Let's be honest — by March, every golfer up here in the northern hemisphere is losing it a little. You've scrolled through last summer's course photos at least twice. You've reorganized your golf bag in the garage. You might have even taken a few practice swings in the living room when nobody was looking. We get it. We're right there with you.

The Countdown Is On

Depending on where you are, the first tee time is anywhere from 6 to 10 weeks away. That might sound like forever, but it's actually the perfect time to start getting your head (and your gear) in the game. Think of February as golf's version of pre-season — except the training camp is mostly in your head and your garage.

Start Stalking the Course Websites

We're not ashamed to admit it — we check opening dates like we're refreshing concert tickets. Courses in the Okanagan and southern Alberta tend to open first, sometimes as early as mid-March if Mother Nature cooperates. Bookmark your favourites, sign up for their newsletters, and be ready to pounce when those first tee times drop.

Dust Off the Bag

When's the last time you actually looked at your gear? March is the perfect time to go through your bag and figure out what survived last season and what didn't. Check your grips — if they're slick and shiny, it's time for a regrip. Count your balls (no judgment on the number you lost last year). Make sure your glove isn't crusty. And for the love of golf, clean your clubs.

Get Your Body Moving

We're not saying you need to become a gym rat, but after a few months of couch season, that first swing of the year can be... humbling. A few simple stretches — hip rotations, shoulder stretches, some core work — can make the difference between a smooth opening round and barely being able to move the next day. Your 40-year-old back will thank you.

Fuel the Obsession

This is prime time for golf content. Watch some tournaments, browse new gear online, argue with your buddies about who's buying the first round of post-game drinks this year. Keep that fire burning. Some of us even hit indoor simulators to scratch the itch — no shame in that game.

Plan Your Season

Got a bucket-list course you've been meaning to play? A golf trip with the crew you've been talking about for three years? February is when talk turns into action. Book it. Put it on the calendar. Give yourself something to look forward to beyond just "sometime this summer."

The Best Part? It's Almost Here

Here's the thing about being a golfer in the northern hemisphere — we earn our season. We sit through months of snow, rain, and darkness, and when that first warm day hits and the courses start opening up? There's no better feeling. That first drive off the first tee, the smell of fresh-cut grass, the sound of a well-struck iron... it's all worth the wait.

So hang in there. Keep dreaming. Keep planning. The season is closer than you think — and it's going to be a good one. ⛳
