Squeezing Every Last Round Out of Fall Before the Snow

Squeezing Every Last Round Out of Fall Before the Snow

Out here in Western Canada, we don't let a little frost stop us. Here's how we keep swinging well into October — shorter days, cooler temps, and all.

If you golf anywhere the seasons change, you know the deal. Summer feels like it flies by, and before you know it, the leaves are turning and the sun's setting at 6 PM. But does that stop us? Not a chance. We squeeze every last round out of the season — even if that means teeing off in a toque (knitted hat) and finishing in the dark.

October Golf Hits Different

There's something special about a crisp October morning on the course. The fairways are firm, the crowds have thinned out, and the fall colours are absolutely unreal. Sure, you might see your breath on the first tee, but by the back nine? That mild autumn sunshine usually makes an appearance. It's honestly some of the best golf of the year — if you're dressed for it.

Layering Is the Name of the Game

You can't just throw on a hoodie and call it good (well, you can, but you'll regret it by hole 5. The trick is layering smart:

  • Base layer: Something moisture-wicking to keep the sweat off your skin. Nobody wants to be damp AND cold.
  • Mid layer: A light fleece or quarter-zip. Warm but not bulky — you still need to swing.
  • Outer layer: A wind-resistant shell for when the breeze picks up. And trust us, it will.

Cold Hands = Bad Golf

Nothing tanks your grip faster than frozen fingers. Keep hand warmers in your pockets, grab some winter golf gloves, or just stuff your hands in your jacket between shots. Your short game will thank you.

The Secret Weapon: A Thermal Vest

A good vest keeps your core toasty without turning you into the Michelin Man. Full arm mobility for your swing, but all the warmth where it counts. Game changer for those late-season rounds.

Don't Forget the Extras

  • Toque or headband: Because losing heat through your head is real, and looking ridiculous is part of fall golf's charm.
  • Neck gaiter: Pull it up when the wind bites, tuck it down when the sun comes out.
  • Thermal socks: Cold feet make every putt feel 10 feet longer. Wool socks are your friend.

Adjust Your Expectations (and Your Club)

Cold air is denser, so your ball isn't going as far as it did in July. Don't fight it — just club up. Grab one or two extra clubs and focus on solid contact. Pro tip: keep a couple of spare balls in your jacket pocket. Warm balls compress better and fly farther. Science!

Fuel Up for the Cold

You might not feel thirsty, but your body is working overtime to keep warm. Pack a thermos of coffee or hot chocolate (we won't judge what you add to it), and bring some snacks. Granola bars, trail mix — whatever keeps you going through 18.

Embrace the Season

Look, we get it. Not everyone wants to golf when it's 8°C and the shadows are long by 3 PM. But for those of us who live for it? Fall golf is pure magic. Fewer people on the course, gorgeous scenery, and the satisfaction of knowing you're getting every possible round in before the snow flies.

So layer up, grab your warmest gear, and get out there. The course isn't going to play itself — and the season isn't going to last forever. ⛳
